Founded in 1950 by Arie Persoon, the company started out growing tomatoes and lettuce. In 1980, Aad Persoon, together with his brother John Persoon, expanded the business to include the cultivation of houseplants.
The first generation of the Ammerlaan family grew cucumbers. Since the 1980s, the company has switched to tropical green plants, most of which come from Central America.
